Minneapolis Bridge Collapse

The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed Wednesday evening in Minneapolis. The bridge was loaded with rush-hour traffic and dropped more than 60 feet into the Mississippi River. At least 9 people were killed and more than 60 were injured. One section of the bridge lay flat in the river, with cars parked on the rolling pavement.
A 2001 evaluation of the bridge, prepared for the state transportation department by the University of Minnesota Civil Engineering Department, reported that there were preliminary signs of fatigue on the steel truss section under the roadway, but no cracking.

A school bus packed with 60 children on their way back from a day camp teetered on a length of the bridge after bouncing off the carriageway.
All the students escaped through a rear door, but two of the children and two teachers were injured.

“Some kids (from the school bus) had blood on their faces, but thank God everybody could move,” said witness Jay Danz, whose own car passed beneath the bridge just seconds before it fell.

My heart goes out to all the victims of this terrible accident in Minneapolis
