Evernote Publicly launched

Digital life bookmarking tool Evernote emerges from beta for its public launch today, with a few new features I think I’ll enjoy. The first new feature I’m excited about is the new clipper tool, which works more like Twine’s bookmarking tool in that it slides down from your browser toolbar instead of redirecting to an entirely new page. The other upgrade I’m happy to see is improved organization features, which Mac users will easily appreciate as they work much like a Mac desktop.

The other major change to Evernote is the introduction of premium subscriptions. There were a few times when I described Evernote to a friend and was surprised when they asked how much the service cost, especially considering the number of free bookmarking tools that are already in existence. Given Evernote’s approach to digitizing one’s life, complete with desktop, Web and mobile apps and synchronization, I can understand how one would wonder at the monthly price for such a tool.

Evernote will cost about $5 per month, or $45 per year. Free accounts will still get a good amount of space (40MB), so only the extreme power users will need to pay extra for more space, depending on the size of uploaded content. However, other perks that come with the premium subscription option include first place in the queue for image uploads (during bookmarking, etc.), and SSL securities, which minimizes a user’s need to login frequently while clipping Web content.

Yahoo! BrowserPlus

Fresh off the latest round of its public feud with Microsoft, Yahoo! has announced a new software title, to be known as "BrowserPlus".

Designed to "expand what's possible", BrowserPlus is similar to Google Gears. It allows users to extend the functionality of their browser windows into areas typically dominated by desktop applications. One of the center-pieces of these additional browser capabilities is the ability to send notifications to the desktop, eliminating one of the traditional browser limitations. Yahoo! hopes other functions, such as drag-and-drop, acquisition of online feeds and simpler file uploads, will serve to entice users.

As it has not yet been released, it remains to be seen whether or not BrowserPlus will find a substantial user-base; however, it does show that yahoo is serious about continuing to contend in the ever-more-competitive market for online presence.

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta

Adobe's Photoshop Express, its free, online version of Photoshop is live right now. Targeted at everyday consumers, it's Photoshop stripped down to a pretty slick Flash 9-powered web app we got a demo of earlier today. It's super easy to crop, adjust saturation or exposure, or perform several other simple, but solid photo tweaks, like pop color (pictured). You won't be doing any heavy lifting with it, since you can't work with layers, add text or do anything really awesome, like amazing Giz-style comic bubbles, but your mom will be able to make her pictures look better than ever.

One of the best features is that any change is reversible, and in any order—you can always go back to your original photo, or any step of the editing process. And because it's just a Flash 9 app, it'll run on any browser on Windows, OS X or Linux. Right now, it isn't integrated with Photoshop, like say, .Mac. But that's coming. A service aimed at pro users, with more storage, serious backup and other pro features is in the works, though it'll carry a fee. (BTW, if there's demand for more than 2GB free, they'll pony up.) Here's the whole press release, or you can just start playing with it right now.
