AOL dumps support for Netscape Navigator

The legend is going down. A historic name in software will effectively pass into history in February as AOL discontinues development and active support for the Netscape browser, according to an official blog. AOL will keep delivering security patches for the current version of Netscape until Feb. 1, 2008, after which it will no longer provide active support for any version of the software, according to a Friday entry on The Netscape Blog by Tom Drapeau, lead developer for Netscape.com. The Netscape.com Web site will remain as a general-purpose portal. Netscape was the original mass-market Web browser and helped to popularize the Internet in the mid-1990s, but it has long taken a back seat to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Firefox itself traces its roots back to Netscape software that was made into open source. The Mozilla Foundation was founded in 2003, with support from AOL, and has released successive versions of Firefox while AOL continued to develop Netscape on top of the same platform, Drapeau wrote. Groups within AOL have tried and failed to revive Netscape Navigator and gain market share against Internet Explorer, according to the blog entry. As of this month, Netscape had only 0.6 percent of the browser market, which was still dominated by Internet Explorer with more than 77 percent, according to Web application and analytics firm Net Applications. Firefox was gaining, however, with market share just over 16 percent. Rest in piece.

Rally Racer Colin McRae Killed In Helicopter Crash

LONDON (AP) -- Colin McRae, whose fascination with cars grew into an obsession that led him to 25 wins in a World Rally Championship career, was killed in a helicopter crash along with his 5-year-old son and two others, police said Sunday. He was 39.

McRae was piloting the helicopter, which he owned and was licensed to fly, when it crashed Saturday in a wooded area near his home.

McRae raced in the World Rally Championship from 1987 until 2004, becoming champion in 1995. He also took part in the Paris to Dakar rally, the Le Mans 24 hour race, the Race of Champions and the X Games.

McRae also lent his name to a best-selling computer game, but it was his flamboyant racing style that earned fans in all types of motorsport and lifted the profile of rallying in Britain.

"He was really daring, always pushing it further," Formula One driver Heikki Kovalainen said. "I always liked his attitude. It was maximum attack always and he had some big rolls sometimes. Every time he had one, though it was like: 'Oh well, it's just a roll,' and he just carried on."

Two other people also died in the crash -- 6-year-old Ben Porcelli and 37-year-old Graeme Duncan. The aircraft was badly burned, making it impossible for police to immediately

We send our condolences to the families of Colin McRae, Graeme Duncan and Ben Porcelli.

Minneapolis Bridge Collapse

The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed Wednesday evening in Minneapolis. The bridge was loaded with rush-hour traffic and dropped more than 60 feet into the Mississippi River. At least 9 people were killed and more than 60 were injured. One section of the bridge lay flat in the river, with cars parked on the rolling pavement.
A 2001 evaluation of the bridge, prepared for the state transportation department by the University of Minnesota Civil Engineering Department, reported that there were preliminary signs of fatigue on the steel truss section under the roadway, but no cracking.

A school bus packed with 60 children on their way back from a day camp teetered on a length of the bridge after bouncing off the carriageway.
All the students escaped through a rear door, but two of the children and two teachers were injured.

"Some kids (from the school bus) had blood on their faces, but thank God everybody could move," said witness Jay Danz, whose own car passed beneath the bridge just seconds before it fell.

My heart goes out to all the victims of this terrible accident in Minneapolis

American Idol winner announced

A 17-year-old from Arizona yesterday became the youngest ever winner of American Idol, after viewers cast a record 74 million votes.

Jordin Sparks beat Blake Lewis, 25, to the top spot on the US’s most watched television show after the singer captured the hearts of viewers with her bubbly personality and big voice.

The two finalists embraced after host Ryan Seacrest announced the winner of the sixth season of the contest, with Sparks, dressed in a long, flowing gold gown, having difficulty catching her breath.

"Thank you so much for everything -- Mom and Dad, I love you!" said the emotional teenager, who along with the American Idol title will receive a recording contract.

Backstage, Sparks could barely contain her excitement at joining the ranks of previous"Idol" winners.

"It just turned out pretty cool, I guess" she said, giggling.

Ms Sparks, who is from Glendale, Arizona, and is the daughter of a former National Football League player, Phillippi Sparks, started singing as a toddler and auditioned for American Idol as soon as she could after becoming eligible at the age of 16.

After the show singer Smokey Robinson said: "She sings so good it’s hard to believe that she’s 17. To sing like that you would have to have lived for a long time."

Pirates crack Vista

A genuine crack for Windows Vista has just been released by pirate group Pantheon, which allows a pirated, non-activated installation of Vista (Home Basic/Premium and Ultimate) to be properly activated and made fully-operational.

Unlike cracks which have been floating around since Vista RTM was released in late November, this crack doesn’t simply get around product activation with beta activation files or timestop cracks - it actually makes use of the activation process. It seems that Microsoft has allowed large OEMs like ASUS to ship their products with a pre-installed version of Vista that doesn’t require product activation – apparently because end users would find it too inconvenient.
